@doublebanzai There are positions in which the engine considers its position as lost and undertakes a flight to try to receive the longest sequence of mate, instead of trying to play more complicated positions that generate some possibility of error to the opponent. Here I describe one of these positions: lichess.org/forum/general-chess-discussion/help-to-improve-game-strength-stockfish-uci-and-syzygy-in-endgames
@supertorpe TY for reply... that makes sense.... some or most of my understanding of the intricacies of engines is probably based on older books, such as the one by the designer of big blue... interesting reading, though i guess pretty outdated. i only recently read about neural network engines......
Is there a list of 'typical' endgame positions that would be good to practice with? I haven't watched the entire video yet.
(Editing my own comment: He recommends the book Endgame Strategy, by Shereshevsky. I actually have a copy of this book, and would be happy to share some study positions with anyone interested.)

@UncleVinny If we consider "typical" as the most usual, then take a look at the endgame frequency table:
8.45% rook rook
6.76% rook & bishop rook & knight
3.45% two rooks two rooks
3.37% rook & bishop rook & bishop (same color)
etc.

you can search and practice those endings (and many more) here: chess-endgame-trainer.firebaseapp.com
