I'm confused why my opponent gave me a bunch of time and then resigned.

Why would someone do this?

Maybe he liked the game... or wanted to give you a hint... I know and hate when people in lost position....I know lost position... doesnt want to resign

It was just 6 moves in. So strange. I actually had more time than the original time controls allowed for when he resigned.

The guy is new here. First he didn't understand what KOTH was, then he tried to figure out what the + button does.

probably he thougth that he was giving extratime to himself

It is called *Abuse*
I've had players adding time at the start of a game. It is a form of harassment. Another reason this feature NEEDS to have an option to disable it in game preferences. There is absolutely no reason a player should be allowed to +time your clock, especially without your permission.
