new red audio icon

So I'm observing a game just now and I see a thing I've not seen before, a red audio icon in the upper right. The redness proclaims its importance as compared to all other things on the page. The icon adds clutter. And it does .. what? And when I click, on it, it goes away, violating the principle of least surprise, as the expected behavior when clicking on an audio adjustment is not for the ability to adjust to go away. Once the icon goes away, it isn't clear how to undo whatever clicking on it does.

What is the motivation for this icon and what happens if we don't have it? Does this maybe need some more thinking?
@TBest I had to look around to find out about this as the icon as it stands now is really unintuitive. Maybe what would help is to have a little info box appear upon hovering over the icon or changing it into a info box button. I mean it's a good idea in concept as getting alerts about sounds/games by whitelisting Lichess would be useful if people tend to forget about it while they wait in another tab. But without some context, it just reminds me (and likely a bunch of others) of the universal icon to mute audio on something. So it gives the impression that it does the exact opposite or maybe nothing at all if you are used to interacting with something on the page to activate audio. After all, the icon doesn't seem to disappear after you interact like clicking on the board.
The icon is not visible beside the search icon. I saw it in Firefox appear and disappear.
I use Comodo Dragon (Based on Chromium) and I have not yet seen the red speaker or have sound.

A short cut keyboard letter would be great to enable or disable the sound.
Some keyboard have a sound button, so using that should enable and disable the sound too, but it does not enable the sound.
On Safari it seems completely busted, I can’t ever get a sound wither I click the red icon or not :-(
The icon disappears after clicking on it and we get the sound, but then we cannot click on it again to turn off the sound.
The icon is gone and no longer part of the site-buttons, until a new game is started.
Testing it using Lichess TV... by mouse right click inspect and view page source.
<div class="site-buttons"><div id="warn-no-autoplay"><a data-icon=""></a></div>

I’ve just had to play daily bullet chess without sound ... so I kind of lost many games on t8me when unaware of opponents moves ... pretty bad. I have no idea how to activate sound on iPad ... tried a YouTube video and there is sound generally

From the sounds of things, what autoplays or not is site-specific as some are set up for video/audio (Like Youtube) but others not (Like Vimeo). I'm not super familiar with Mac stuff, but maybe these could help:

For desktops:
www.howtogeek.com/326532/safari-now-disables-auto-playing-videos.-heres-how-to-allow-them-for-certain-sites/

iPads:
www.devicemag.com/how-to-enable-autoplay-on-ipad/

In summary: They both seem to have the same general setup of needing to be on the site you want to tweak, then going "Safari > Settings For This Website" and enabling autoplay. I'm not sure that'll work persay as it could just be bugged on certain OSes or browsers. But it's probably worth trying as a potential workaround.
Thanks for the github link. From it, I understand a bit more about what problem you're trying to solve with this thing. I will say though that I do not like the solution. I think more thinking is required.

For the reasons I described, I think the new thingie worsens the experience in a very common case, maybe the most common - playing a game in the currently open tab.

If you're going to keep it, how about making it so it shows up only when a game is being played in that tab, e.g., not for puzzles or observed games. If you can further identify situations where it should not appear, that might improve it quite a bit. Also maybe look again at having it not disappear after it's clicked.
For me, on Firefox 115.02 I see the red icon but there's no issue, sound plays just fine. In fact, when I start a game, the new game sound plays before the page and board loads.
